History of Peter Street

Peter Street was an English carpenter and builder in London during the sixteenth and early seventeenth centuries. He built the Fortune Playhouse and the Globe Theatre, two significant establishments in the history of the stage in London. Street was born in 1553 and was indentured for an eight-year apprenticeship to carpenter William Brittaine. His talent was noticed by Robert Maskall, an important figure in the carpenters' guild, the Worshipful Company of Carpenters. Street was elected liveryman of the guild in 1584 and became its Second Warden in 1598. He was imprisoned for absence from guild meetings but was released on the same day. Street's first experience of theatre construction was possibly at The Theatre in Shoreditch in 1576.
