History of Forest Row

Forest Row is a village in the Wealden District of East Sussex, England, ranked as Britain's 3rd poshest village in January 2023. The village's name comes from its proximity to the Ashdown Forest, a royal hunting park. It has grown over time, with the establishment of a turnpike road in the 18th century and the opening of the railway between East Grinstead and Tunbridge Wells in 1866. The Yew Tree, a part medieval public house, was a center of smuggling in the 18th century. Brambletye House, built by Sir Henry Compton in 1631, is featured in the 1826 novel Brambletye House. In 1801, John Beatson and his son were hanged in the presence of 3,000 people. In 1963, John F. Kennedy visited Forest Row during his visit to the UK. The village became a Transition village in 2007 and has an electoral ward in the same name. The village is located in the north-west corner of East Sussex, bordering West Sussex, Kent, and Surrey.
