History of East Horsley

East Horsley is a village and civil parish in Surrey, England, located 21 miles southwest of London. It is part of the A246 between Leatherhead and Guildford, and is connected to London Waterloo via Horsley and Effingham Junction railway stations. The village has a rich history, with two manors held by Lanfranc, Archbishop of Canterbury, and the Bishop's Manor belonging to the see of Exeter. In 1792, an Inclosure Act allowed William Currie MP to inclose most of Horsley Common and the common fields and waste. Horsley Towers, a gothic mansion designed by Sir Charles Barry, was purchased by William Currie in 1784 and underwent extensive changes. The property was later acquired by Ada, Lady Lovelace, a writer, mathematician, and computer programmer. The 1st Earl of Lovelace applied restrictive covenants on his former fields, leading to the majority of homes being detached. Horsley Towers was also the home of Sir Thomas Sopwith, an aviation pioneer.
