History of Bastion Highwalk

King's Bastion is a coastal bastion in Gibraltar, located between Line Wall Road and Queensway. It was built in 1773 as a Moorish city gate and later developed by the Spanish in 1575. The bastion served as the command post during the Great Siege of Gibraltar, where the Spanish floating batteries were orchestrated. The bastion was designed by Lieutenant colonel Sir William Green and included casemates for barracks and 800 men. In the late 19th century, the bastion was repurposed as a dockyard and the area's first electricity-generating station was built. Today, it serves as Gibraltar's leisure center and is commemorated with a plaque honoring General Robert Boyd, the Governor of Gibraltar.
